CrodaTherm ME Wax

Microencapsulation

CrodaTherm microencapsulated PCMs comprise of a bio-based PCM wax core surrounded by a durable acrylic polymer shell. The proprietary technology is 100% formaldehyde free with extremely high latent heat capacities and is supplied as both a powder and a water-based dispersion. By microencapsulating the PCM wax, the material does not need to be microencapsulated in the final application, enabling many more areas to take advantage of our CrodaTherm technology.

Why microencapsulate PCMs?

Microencapsulation is the process of containing a substance in a coating on a scale smaller than the width of a human hair. On a larger scale, it is similar to putting ice into a rigid water balloon; when the ice melts, it is contained and will not leak. By microencapsulating CrodaTherm waxes in an acrylic polymer shell, the particles will remain solid even when the CrodaTherm core changes phase into a liquid.

Microencapsulation technology

Our patented microencapsulation technology maximises latent heat properties with no impact on shell strength and allows the material to be processed into the end application without degradation due to chemical, thermal or mechanical stresses. The unique technology has been developed in-house and we regularly work with our customers to find the right solution. Contact your Croda sales representative for more information.

Applications of microencapsulated PCMs

Textiles

Consumers expect textiles to keep up with both their active lifestyle and the everyday. By incorporating CrodaTherm microencapsulated PCM into textiles and fibres, a more comfortable and stable temperature profile is achieved.

Bedding & foam

Bedding and foam textiles can quickly become uncomfortable, especially in hot and humid environments. Mattresses and bedding materials containing CrodaTherm microencapsulated PCMs can improve thermal comfort and quality of sleep.

Construction

Lightweight construction has many environmental benefits throughout the initial build phase, but long-term operation efficiency can suffer. The reduced thermal mass of the building can lead to temperature spikes, leading to extra cooling through the use of HVAC systems. CrodaTherm microencapsulated PCMs can add lightweight thermal mass and passive temperature control to building materials to improve long-term operational efficiency.

Other applications

CrodaTherm microencapsulated PCMs are ideal for use in any application where skin or environmental temperature regulation is required.

Our recommendations

Consumers expect textiles to keep up with both their active lifestyle and the everyday. By incorporating CrodaTherm microencapsulated PCM into textiles and fibres, a more comfortable and stable temperature profile is achieved.
