Cartridge emulsion explosives

Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) emulsions are widely used in both bulk and cartridge emulsifier systems. It is well known across the industry that emulsifiers for cartridge systems are subject to higher stress with tougher stability requirements than those used in bulk applications.

Our range of cartridge emulsifiers offer the following benefits:

  • excellent long term stability;
  • provides improved emulsion viscosity; and
  • compatibility with mixed oxidiser systems.

Test method

Our mining emulsifiers were tested in a stressful cartridge mixed oxidiser formulation, using a typical formulation shown on the right.

The oxidiser phase was heated in a bath with a temperature set to 90°C, while the fuel phase was heated to 80°C. The fuel phase was stirred at 500 rpm and the oxidiser phase added to it over 1 minute, then the emulsion was stirred at 1500 rpm for 5 minutes.

The emulsions were then cycled through a temperature range from -20°C to 40°C over a 24 hour period and crystallisation measurements taken to give an indication of stability performance.

Our highest performing emulsifiers gave 60-140% improvement compared to PIBSA based competitor product.

Cartridge formulation:

  • oxidiser phase 90%
  • fuel phase including waxes 8%
  • emulsifier 2%
